Description:
·Removes rust, corrosion, grease, tar, dirt, or paint from metal or composite surfaces by directing a spray of various grit compounds, seed or steel shot, or plastic media, using compressed air from a nozzle, or by chemical/stripping agents.
·The use of hand or power tools may be required to complete the removal/stripping of surface, coating and/or corrosion.
Working from oral and written instructions, sets up the necessary equipment for using aluminum oxide, glass beads, grit, plastic media and other chemical agents such as cleaning compounds and stripper as required to clean parts in preparations for painting or repairing parts.
·Selects correct tooling to avoid damage to critical areas.
·Loads components to be cleaned into blasting compartments or works in open hanger area on aircraft and large components cleaning, masking, and removing paint.
·Manipulates hose to direct stream of cleaning agent to remove surface contaminants from the parent material or desired substrate.
·Using blasting compartments, reached in through the rubber lined openings and holds work piece in abrasive stream while viewing progress of work through compartment window.
·Takes precaution to avoid uneven blasting which might significantly change the shape or balance of critical objects.
·Exercises care to avoid rough polished or bearing surface by masking such areas.
·Masks to protect bearings, glass, fiberglass, etc., from chemical damage.
·Cleans disassembled parts by using solvent at a cleaning booth and uses air to dry parts after cleaning. Uses steam cleaner to clean aircraft or components before and after stripping, hand cleans and treats surface before moving to line for repairing or painting.
·On alternate assignments, transports items to be processed into work area by means of dollies, hoist, etc.
·Cleans aircraft surface, tape seals, wraps, and prepares aircraft surface for spray lac (cocoon) when aircraft required long time storage or low shipboard shipment.
·Required to apply chemical conversion and/or protective spray coatings to the work piece.
·May be required to work repetitious job assignments.
Requires sufficient qualifying experience in the processes involved to remove paint and/or corrosion by chemical or particle blast method.
·Must be able to set up work in blasting equipment, select proper processes and tolling, and load machines with various blasting compounds.
·Required to adapt to applicable modern technology developed in the trade field and become familiar with and operate new or modern tolls and equipment associated with the trade skills. Mist knows the types of material being worked and be able to read and interpret instructions, labels, tags, work orders, etc., and be able to identify basic metals and know the effects of acids and solvents on these metals when not controlled.
Receives oral instructions from supervisor.
·Incumbents are responsible for ensuring that Total Quality is incorporated during work processes and in completed work by thoroughness in complying with FOD, Tool Control, Housekeeping, and Certification.
·Worker inspects own work; however, work is subject to inspection by shop supervisor and/or leader assigned.
·Written guides such as work orders, local process specifications or special instructions pertaining to sandblasting, cleaning, paint stripping, corrosion treatment, vapor honing and finishing, Damage to materials, tools and equipment is minimal when work is properly performed. Incumbents are required to support OJT of inexperienced personnel and/or trainees by sharing their knowledge and skills with personnel assigned to work with them.
Required to adapt to applicable modern technology developed in the trade field and become familiar with and operate new or modern tools and equipment associated with the trade skills.
